Gas Prices Blamed For Crime Spree

Soaring gasoline prices are blamed for an increase in crimes involving the much-in-demand-fuel.

A number of gasoline drive-off crimes were reported through local law enforcement agencies during the weekend. One such crime was reported at the Super Stop Market located at 1198 North Locust Avenue. There, a clerk reported that a young couple traveling in a silver Chevrolet Cobalt bearing Michigan license plates left without paying for the gasoline they had pumped.

The clerk told Lawrenceburg Police Officers that the couple had stolen a total of $20.00 worth of gasoline.

The store security system did capture photos of the crime. They are currently being used to assist detectives in their investigation.

Shortly before 9:00 p.m. Sunday owner Louise Mashburn summoned Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies to Mashburn’s General Merchandise, 24 Mockerson Road in the Five Points community. Mashburn reported that an individual driving a light blue Chevrolet Camaro pumped $46.03 worth of gasoline, then fled from the store.

Mashburn stated that the vehicle may have bore Alabama license plates. She indicated that the suspect left, heading toward nearby Rabbit Trail Road.

Although they conducted a sweep of the area, deputies reported they were unable to locate the suspect.
